The expression eager beaver refers to someone who is zealous about work. The idiom alludes to the beaver who works hard to build their underwater dwellings. The use of the word eager here has a positive connotation. But in Matthew 6:32 another type of eagerness is forbidden by God. The word “seek” in verse 32 is the Greek word epizeteo which means to seek eagerly with much stress.
“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.” Matthew 6:32.
I was talking to a sales person one time and he was expressing his anger over a colleague who he said stole his client. This conversation reminded me of Matthew 6:32. Both sales persons were eagerly seeking for their material provisions resulting in a quarrel. But it should not be so with God’s children. You don’t have to labor in sorrow to have your needs met. God wants us to do a different kind of seeking in Matthew 6:33. He wants us to seek first His kingdom and his righteousness and as we do so, He will supply all our needs and more!
