Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food;Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls – Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. Habakkuk 3:17-18
The coronavirus pandemic is unlike anything in our lifetime with its sweeping human and economic toll. There were other diseases that plagued humanity but none so vicious as COVID-19. The only epidemic that remains unparalleled in history was the Black Death in the 14th century which killed about 50 million people in Europe.
The impact of the coronavirus to the economy is similar to a famine scenario that the prophet Habakkuk describes. Habakkuk however declares that even under such circumstances, his faith in God will not be shaken. As God’s children we should manifest the same attitude of faith. When our stocks have plunged, when our jobs have ceased, and when our businesses have stopped yielding profits, we can still rejoice in the Lord. Despite our earthly losses, we have a joy that’s indescribable because God gives us such grace through His Holy Spirit. God does not only bless our hearts with joy amidst difficulties, but He provides our needs as we seek Him first according to what He has promised in Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
Bible commentator Matthew Henry beautifully explains it. “They can sit down upon the heap of the ruins of their creature-comforts, and even then, praise the Lord, as the God of their salvation, the salvation of the soul, and rejoice in him as such, in their greatest distresses. Joy in the Lord is especially seasonable when we meet with losses and crosses in the world.”
